Thanks for posting Oliver. In summary a tool is just a tool, it is what you do with it that matters. And of course doing something useful with it requires expertise, imagination, and knowing the operating context you are seeking to understand. One point I'd raise here - the Loukides quote "the users are in a feedback loop in which they contribute to the products they use. That’s the beginning of data science." is WAY too narrow in how it is presented. Chances are it was out of context because the idea that data science is only expressed in consumer-oriented business simply isn't true.
