How to learn?

By Juraj B., partner, strategy at DIGMIA s.r.o. - Thursday, November 22, 2012

I would like to ask what are the best (online, off-line) courses for advanced programmers on data mining and information extraction that money can buy? I don't mean howtos on using commercial tools, but algorithms, best practices, real world use cases, etc. Are there any books worth reading? We would like to build a great big data scientists team here in Slovakia. We are hiring good Java programmers, people who studied and used AI, etc. I am looking for that "last bit" that would get those people up to speed and current development of how things are really done in the field. Thanks!

There is a slew of resources on the net. Here is a few cool ones: 1) Check out Spark platform from AmpLab of UCBerkeley 2) Kaggle for crowdsourced analytics - majority of the data scientist use open source R and associated libraries and 3) Stanford's Machine Learning course on Coursera.

Mr.Juraj, I believe you need to target few major skills to become a Data Scientist. • Data mining and machine learning techniques • Data visualization techniques • Data warehousing and ETL knowledge • Know about latest Tools or Vendors who is offering Big data (like Hadoop and other major vendors) • Predictive modeling • Stats tools like R • Knowledge of unstructured and structured databases. There are huge number of resource in the WEB for every topic and great people to advise/help you as well. This will be a long journey for most of us but not impossible. Just start loving numbers and start seeing those numbers in meaningful way...you get motivated! Have a fun.
